The Fairness Doctrine addressed bias and fact omission on transmitters licensed by the FCC. That included satellite uplinks that carried the content. Unfortunately, it does not cover fiber and copper cables. Therefore, even had it not been abandoned, its effect would be much less than before.

The FCC has been neutered. It happened a generation ago. Thank Saint Ronnie for that one. It's over. The FCC is now someone that renews your license right on schedule. For a fee. Plus legal costs for specialized and very expensive communications lawyers to translate English into bureaucratese.

The issue of propaganda as news was resolved years ago, when no one cared that three companies run by hard-right billionaires were buying up all the media. Laws could have been passed, but they weren't. Oh, a couple were, maybe, but they had too many loopholes, and besides pundits are the new priesthood and they all love making money for their statements, so they cater to the oligarchy.

The last chance, really, is the Internet. They'd love to control that too, and perhaps someday they will, but right now there's too much bandwidth to allow total corporate control.

Republicans hope Iran conflict doesn’t become a ‘forever war’

Republicans are hoping the administration’s military operation against Iran doesn’t spiral into an endless war as the 2026 midterm cycle ramps up, a scenario some worry could threaten the GOP’s electoral prospects.

Republicans have largely rallied behind President Trump’s decision to strike Iran. A war powers resolution that would have required Trump to seek congressional authorization to continue military action against Iran was defeated in the House in a 212-219 vote, with Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Warren Davidson (Ohio) being the only Republicans to cross the aisle and support it. Republicans successfully blocked a similar resolution in the Senate.

They're such cowards that they don't wanna get taxed

Starbucks tycoon Howard Schultz joins the billionaire blue-state exodus

It turns out that even the wokest billionaires are just like you and me — they don’t much like paying taxes, either.

The latest example is Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, who is reportedly spending some $44 million for a penthouse apartment at the elite Surf Club in Surfside, Fla. Schultz simultaneously announced that he and his wife were leaving their longtime base in Seattle.

They can have Florida. Given what we let the oligarchy do to the climate, it's going to become a very bad place to live. Maybe they'll all build huge compounds surrounded by golf resorts down there, then a global warming hurricane will take them out, saving us the trouble of putting the US through another apocalyptic war resistance episode.

Voter suppression statewide

Florida passes voter measure modeled after SAVE Act

Florida state lawmakers on Thursday passed a voting requirements bill modeled after the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, which has become President Trump’s top legislative priority.

House Bill 991 passed the state House by a 77-28 vote, hours after passing in the state Senate. The bill requires Floridians to show proof of citizenship when they register to vote, namely with a birth certificate or a passport.

Mark Robinson admits 'I lied' about CNN story

Former North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson admitted he lied about a bombshell CNN KFile investigation during the final months of his 2024 gubernatorial campaign, uncovering his extensive history of posting inflammatory and racist comments on a pornography website.

Robinson initially denied the report and sued CNN for $50 million that fall as he marched on with his gubernatorial campaign. Robinson eventually lost to current Democratic Gov. Josh Stein by more than 14 points.

Republicans strip power from Dem who shocked with red state upset

Texas Republicans have moved to ensure that a Democratic lawmaker elected in a shock special election upset earlier this year will effectively have no power — at least for the time being.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, "On Monday afternoon, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced which senators would fill committee vacancies, following recent membership shakeups ... Newly sworn in Sen. Taylor Rehmet wasn’t among the senators named on the lieutenant governor’s latest list of committee appointees."

Eight countries condemn Israel’s death penalty law targeting Palestinians amid global backlash

A newly approved law by Israel’s parliament introducing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis has triggered widespread condemnation. Foreign ministers from Pakistan, Turkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE issued a joint statement denouncing the measure, warning it reflects “increasingly discriminatory, escalating Israeli practices that entrench a system of apartheid”.

They cautioned that such policies promote “a rejectionist discourse tha...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, on Monday won a Supreme Court order that is expected to lead to the dismissal of his criminal conviction for refusing to testify to Congress.

Louisiana GOP races to eliminate an elected office won by an exonerated man

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man imprisoned for nearly 30 years before being exonerated won a landmark election in New Orleans promising to fix a judicial system that failed him. Now, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and the GOP-controlled Legislature are racing to eliminate his job before he can be sworn in.

Calvin Duncan won 68% of the vote last November to become the Orleans Parish clerk of criminal court after pledging to reform the justice system based on his own experience fighting to access court records while in maximum security prison.

Justice Department moves to toss seditious conspiracy convictions of Oath Keepers and Proud Boys

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Tuesday asked a federal appeals court to throw out the seditious conspiracy convictions of Proud Boys and Oath Keepers leaders who were sentenced to prison terms for leading members of the far-right extremist groups in attacking the U.S. Capitol to keep President Donald Trump in office over five years ago.

Trump commuted the prison sentences of several Proud Boys and Oath Keepers leaders last January in a sweeping act of clemency for all 1,500-plus defendants charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack.

Protesters rally against TPUSA tour featuring JD Vance

Protesters gathered in front of the Classic Center Tuesday in response to Turning Point USA’s (TPUSA) “This is the Turning Point” tour featuring Vice President JD Vance. The protest was hosted by Young Democrats of UGA (YDUGA), Young Democratic Socialists of America at UGA (YDSA UGA) and Indivisible GA 10, and featured multiple speakers.

“We’re just letting the administration know we’re fed up,” Luke Trandel, the political director of YDUGA, said, referencing a rising cost of living and the war in Iran. “If they’re gonna come to our town, we’re gonna let them know how we feel.”

Now it’s Republicans blaming American companies for inflation

When Democrats were grappling with sky-high inflation just a couple of years ago, Donald Trump called their plans to fight price gouging by American companies tantamount to communism.

Now that it’s the Republican Party in the affordability hot seat, Trump Cabinet members — and GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill — are doing much the same, laying into CEOs and calling for new regulations and antitrust suits.

The interesting thing here is how the party in power never does anything about this, and the party out of power always promises to. Only the names change.

Roy unveils immigration bill dubbed ‘MAMDANI Act’

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) on Monday introduced an immigration bill he dubbed the “MAMDANI Act.”

The Measures Against Marxism’s Dangerous Adherents and Noxious Islamists Act proposes amending the Immigration and Nationality Act, which dictates federal immigration law, to allow for the deportation, denaturalization, denial of citizenship or entry to any migrant that is a member of a socialist party, communist party, the Chinese Communist Party or Islamic fundamentalist party.

Democratic voters shut out of picking Louisiana’s new Supreme Court justice

When thousands of voters cast their ballots next month to decide who will join the Louisiana Supreme Court next, none will be registered Democrats.

Louisiana’s new semi-closed primary election system, pushed by Republican Gov. Jeff Landry, has shut Democrats out of picking the state’s newest justice entirely.

Kash Patel has admitted to alcohol-related crimes, report reveals, as Trump stands by FBI director

President Donald Trump is continuing to back FBI Director Kash Patel after allegations that the 46-year-old former podcaster is frequently drunk in public to the point of intoxication and other allegedly troubling behavior reported in a blockbuster magazine article last week.

According to documents published by The Intercept Friday, Patel admitted to having been arrested on two occasions — once for public intoxication as a minor while an undergraduate in Virginia, and once for public urination while out drinking in New York City when he was a law student.

Bullshit

Chief Justice John Roberts says Supreme Court is not political

HERSHEY, Pa. — Supreme Court justices are not “political actors,” Chief Justice John Roberts said Wednesday, insisting unpopular court decisions are based solely on the law.

“I think, at a very basic level, people think we’re making policy decisions, we're saying we think this is how things should be, as opposed to what the law provides,” he said. “I think they view us as purely political actors, which I don’t think is an accurate understanding of what we do.”

No, John, we know exactly what you do. Your mandate was handed you by the neoconservative aristocracy that got you picked for your lifetime-tenure jobs in the first place. We are only too aware that this mandate was to put US jurisprudence right back to how it had been before that nasty civil rights movement changed people's perceptions.

You succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams, and now you're getting your butts caught in the backlash. I have no sympathy for any of you. Get out of the way.

'Proven bigot and anti-Semite': AOC rejects anti-Trump darling Marjorie Taylor Greene

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) argued that the left should refrain from associating with former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene at an event hosted by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics on Friday.

Greene has enjoyed a surplus of strange new respect from progressives in the months since her falling out with President Donald Trump last year. But on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez drew a firm line between herself and Greene, whom she characterized as “a proven bigot and anti-Semite.”
